I think Windows XP needs a minimum of 256 Mb. of RAM to work properly.

P.S. :- It can also be due to a huge no. of Startup Applications.

go to registry editor > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop > MenuShowDelay > put its value 0. Now, restart the system and your Start Menu will be very fast. run a virus scan on http://housecall.trendmicro.com . do a scandisk and defrag of ur system. install Tune-Up Utilities and do disk clean up.

if the above solutions do not solve it try and stop those pesky services which are inbuilt in win XP ...
type services.mnc in run....
stop all unnecessary services.... warning stopping critical serices may render your XP unstable.....
for an exhaustive list check out former digit mags....

all the unwanted services can be changed by typing services.msc in command line. Try out some defragmanting tools like O&O defrag. Try Regcleaner to clean unwanted and invalid registry values.

I think you have a lot of programs on your startup. If there are any remove them.

if you are using any desktop enhancement softwares like Windows Blinds or StyleXp then disable them....they consume a lot of RAM
