Unhappy Problems after having a virus

I have a Thinkpad R40 running XP SP3. I got a virus a few months ago, removed it and now have a couple of problems. I didn't have a registry backup - I hadn't done it for a while as I had not installed any software - so I could not restore it.

1. Whether I am using the battery or not, the icon in the system tray always displays "on AC power". I now have no idea how much battery power I have left. This used to display correctly before the virus.

2. My audio keeps failing and I have to use the Thinkpad Configuration Device Configuration Profile Wizard to disable the audio device and then enable it to be able to hear anything. The little volume control icon that used to appear in the system tray no longer appears. The Windows Device Manager shows no problems and that it is working correctly although I get no sound. This had no problems before the virus, too.

3. My computer just runs extremely slow in general. I have cleaned the registry and defragmented the disk, removed extra files and the disk drive just seems to have periods of be being accessed and slowing down the laptop. There are times I have to wait 10 to 15 minutes before the disk drive stops being accessed. I can use things during this time but I have to wait a long time.

I don't know whether this is the correct forum for this but if anyone can help me I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
