Software not responding

Hello to all,
My pc is suffering frm a strange problem. Many programs like
window explorer, mozilla firefox , vlc media player used to stop working with an error message " not responding" I have scanned my system with avast professional edition but no result. Is this a hardware problem??? My HDD showed an error " HDD status bad backup and replace" but after disk checking error disappeared ......... I am using vista ultimate 32 bit , 2GB ram , AMD dual core 4000+ processor

Scan your PC with: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html and also with http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free If problem is not solved try to uninstall and reinstall softwares viz. firefox and vlc. See what happens.
