Smile Networking Vista and XP

Dear Friends,
I have tried to setup a network between my XP Desktop and Vista Laptop. I have read various pages on the web regarding this but could not achieve the required result. What needs to be done? Is there any old thread relating to this problem.
Both my systems are having same Workgroup name. I have also installed the Windows update for XP KB922120.
I can see my XP computer on Vista but cannot open it. In XP I cannot see the Vista Computer.
Where and what went wrong?

Thanks

Thanks
I forgot to give details of the network. Today itself I had my old modem replaced with the Type IV modem from BSNL with Wi-fi capability. My Laptop access net by Wifi and desktop by Ethernet. The modem is ZXDSL 531B.
Is the process described on your webpage same for both the type of connections.
Crosscable and Wifi

for wi-fi you need not configure .use bsnl defualt settings.only for crosscable u need to enter those settings.
just turn off the firewall before trying as described.

u cannot setup lan just with bsnl modem.ull need a router.
