network usage when nothing's working

I have airtel gprs connection and am using it on XP.
I have noticed it quite a few times that the icon in the system tray shows network usage even though there is no program as such running.
Is there any software which can tell me which processes are using internet at any instant?
Please tell me!!

virus, malware or spyware also uses some data even when you are not working online . . .

as far as viruses are concerned i am using regularly updated avira antivir which does not show any infection.

Comodo firewall shows which software is using how much bandwidth at that instant in %.

Go scan with these softwares, your is the case of Dialers, which connects to internet without user consent:

1. http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

2. http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

Update them to latest definition before scanning and perform full system scan, not the quick one.

check if you have the automatic updates for your antivirus... maybe that is downloading some updates (virus definitions etc)

and yeah to check net usage, use a firewall....zone alarm should do the trick... so can comodo
