For Star Wars: Episode II, Linux made Yoda a light saber-wielding action figure. In Lord of the Rings 2, waves of Orcs attacking the colossal fortress at Helm's Deep are not thousands of human extras, but digital actors created using Linux. To consumers, Linux may rank third after Windows and Macintosh, but Linux dominates motion pictures more than anyone but studio insiders may realize. It has been used to produce more than 30 blockbuster films, including Lord of the Rings, Star Wars: Episode II, Harry Potter, Shrek, and Titanic

Hmm, Star ward ROTS is probabely made in Max 6 or 7, some large scale tarrins are made in Maya, (take a look at the credits in the end of movie, I saw it today)
Linux doesn't dominates the Movie industry, Mac OS X & Then Windows XP does, also workstation running SGI stuff etc, but they are big ones, dam pro
3Ds Max is more popular in gaming , while Maya in Movies, Brayse & Vue for landscapes both for games & movies specially Large sacle, making models in Max is more easier then Maya
Revenge of the Sith & clone wars was made half on computers & half with blue screen, so there was real life making, these days, much of the animation is made via chroma keying, SIN city is made 95% with blue screen & then in Computers

Earlier, the Jurassic Park dinosaurs were made using 3ds max, but nowadays to make the effects more realistic, they use special customized software. Though still 3ds max, Maya and other are in use. Spiderman 2 had a special CGI software for the action sequences in the movie.
