Default Windows XP boot error

Hey,
When I try to boot up windows XP, it never works. It goes fine until you reach the screen where it says Windows XP and has a little bar below it with 3 blue blocks that move to signify loading.
My problem is that on the first try(the first time i press my start button on the cabinet) the computer hangs at that screen(The one described above) when I restart the computer(pressing the restart button on the cabinet) i get a screen that asks me to open in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, the last known good configuration and start windows normally.
The computer works if i select 'Last known good configuration'. Otherwise it doesnt. Did not try to start in safe mode. Tried to restore the system, but it failed.

If you have the Windows XP Installation CD, you can try to repair your copy of XP. Try checking your RAM as well. I remember having some weird glitches on my PC before due to faulty RAM.

Is there any way I can check the RAM short of opening up my cabinet?

dude..

what software or driver you've installed at last... go to safe mode and uninstall newly installed software/drivers. sometimes they're causing problems..
