Question Is Porn the Key to the High-Def DVD War?

Is porn the key to the high-def DVD war? I think not, and I was personally stunned when a writer for EE Times (of all places) suggested as much, commenting: "Thirty years ago, VHS toppled Betamax in part because of the adult film industry, and now some see blue movies playing a key role again as backers of HD-DVD and Blu-ray maneuver to make their formats the standard…"

This thinking is incredibly common, because a large contingent of the public seriously wants to believe that porn drives innovation. The only innovation porn has driven online has been pop-ups. Gosh, let's all cheer for that innovation.

I've gotten into more debates over the notion that all advances in technology are due to porn than any other topic. And there is zero evidence to support this assertion. With Beta versus VHS, the deal breaker was the fact that you could record a sporting event on VHS while it was impossible to do so on Beta. The 4 hours of recording time on VHS (which was extended to 6) made the difference. And here's a breakthrough notion: The VHS-based products were cheaper to buy and use.

Hey, let's throw porn into the mix and credit that industry for VHS's success.

I have never been able to figure out who put the notion into the public domain that all technology advances are thanks to porn. That idea has mystified me for years. Did TV supplant radio because of porn? Did radio become hugely successful because of porn? Were magazines popularized because of porn? Did Gutenberg revolutionize the world because of porn? Did laser printers appear because of porn? Did dual-core processors come from porn?

Nobody can actually name one thing that they can prove evolved from porn, so what exactly is the assertion all about? Is it some weird sick joke? Is it wishful thinking? The latter is what concerns me most, because people who bandy this argument about (usually when you least expect it) simply must wish it were true because they want to rationalize porn as beneficial to progress.

Hey folks, if you like porn, I don't care. Just stop throwing it into the chatter as if it were actually important, especially in relation to technology. It's not.

And let's get real about the Internet. Without porn, the Internet would be just as successful, maybe even more so! The same will also hold true for any winner of the DVD format wars. Let's look at this objectively.
