Arrow BCCI's New Rules for Indian Cricket

You have probably heard about the coaches.

# Ravi Shashtri has been appointed as the Cricket Manager for India s upcoming tour to Bangladesh.

# Venkatesh Prasad appointed as the bowling coach

# Robin Singh appointed as the fielding coach.

Now some restrictions on ads:

# No player can endorse more than 3 products

# No same product can be endorsed by more than 2 players.

# No players will be allowed to do endorsements two weeks before a tour.

# Players will have to seek BCCI's permission before signing endorsement.

Other rules:

# All players should play domestic cricket

# Zonal system has been scrapped (very good)

# Players will be paid according to performance

# Players cannot speak to the media exclusively. Only captain can speak to media and that too not exclusively.

# All state cricket boards must start cricket academies by 2009.

# Frequency of under-19 tours will be increased.

Atlast something positive

I support almost all moves. But BCCI kept quite again on selectors. Mostly these selectors are not full time and members elsewhere also. BCCI should get full time selectors who work only for BCCI and not elsewhere.

I watched the programme too, and I seem to agree to most of the things discussed there. Basically, all players are afraid of the BCCI, they just want to be in the team. There is no unity among the players, and senior players should take the initiative. And that endorsement restriction is just to please the public.

A valid point made by Ajay jadeja was that a player gets endorsements based on his performance ...
So the ban on endorsements is a bane for both players and companies..

^^ But they are getting too much money without performing well.If they want to do endorsements then they can become models. They are focusing too much on endorsements.Dhoni is an example of this he wants fame. What are hockey players getting in this country?

The number of endorsements a player gets directly depends on his performance. For eg. after Dhoni became No. 1 ODI Batsman according to ICC Ranking he got tons of endorsements. On the other hand Sehwag has lost endorsements like Mayur.
If he is doing well, he should be allowed to make money. They are the top XV out of a billion. They deserve the money. Being a pro sports person is hard. Remember, that what they earn during these 10 years is pretty much their earning for life (not everyone becomes a commentator or a top coach).
They earn 2.5 lakh per match which takes their annual earnings from matches alone to some where around 1 crore (30 ODIs, 12 tests). Add the performance incentive of Rs. 3 Lakh per series and the figure can go anywhere around 1.5 crores. How much more would they like to earn? Is there are a limit or not?

You talk about endorsements not being a reason of bad performance. May be the time used up in endorsements is not the reason but the way it effects the players definitely is. Just look at how Dhoni performed before getting any endorsements and then compare his current performance. Look at Harbhajan Singh...the little guy who used to bowl using Onions and was bowling magnificently well before he got into the advertisement stuff. What happened? He is a terrible bowler now and even the bulky Powar outshines him. Look at what we are getting from Irfan Pathan now. He looks completely finished. The all-rounder who was supposed to become next Wasim Akram for Cricket World is bowling at 75miles or less In his early 20s? When did this happen? When he was running to get biryani from the mosque or when he was walking on ramp wearing cool shades and white jackets?

What we have to understand is that the endorsements are not consuming their time but their attention. They all start to feel themselves as rockstars and that too very early in their careers. This makes them lose focus and the results are for everyone to see. They are simply too young to handle the attention and money that endorsements bring with them. The adrenaline rush needs to be controlled in some manner. There has to be a limit to everything and this is definitely the way to go. Not the most pleasant one but if implemented earnestly...it will be effective.

BCCI doesn't have right to limit players' earnings but they do not intend to do it either. They are just controlling something that they feel is hampering their employees' performance and is making them lose focus. As an employer they are in their full rights to create rules that they feel are right and performance enhancing. If the employee (players) do not want to agree with the rules then I am quite sure that they will be allowed to leave. No questions asked.

Now coming to endorsement and performance issue. Did you actually read the part of my post where I mentioned the "adrenaline rush" thing? Dhoni was averaging in higher 60s before he got into advertisements. Where is he now? Harbhajan Singh was the youngest player to be signed by Pepsi. This lead him to perform very poorly (rockstar feelings?) and got himself dropped. Now that he is back since some years..we can see him in many campaigns and the performance is again going downhill. Irfan Pathan's poor show is because of Chappell? What did he do? Ask him to bowl at slower pace? Blaming someone else for a player's performance is ridiculous and immature. New technologies are developed to help people and Pathan is not the only sports person in whole world to be worked on by biomechanics. If they were reducing the performance of sports persons then do you think anyone would follow them?

BCCI has every right to lay the rules for their employees and they have done that only. Look at doctors for instance. They are forced by various medical institutions not to practice privately because of various reasons. I don't see any one complaining. If someone doesn't want to work in particular kind of work environment then no one, be it BCCI or any other employer, can force him/her to work. Same is true for cricket players. You don't like the rules? Take a walk...
