Ireland caused the biggest upset in World Cup history as they beat Pakistan by three wickets at Sabina Park in Kingston to send the 1992 champions crashing out.

The result is one of the biggest shocks in the nine-tournament history of the World Cup which was first played in 1975.

Ireland, requiring a revised target of 128 to win, won with a six over mid-wicket by captain Trent Johnston off Azhar Mahmood. There were 8.2 overs still remaining.

The result means Pakistan, who also lost their opener against West Indies on Tuesday, are out and Ireland are in pole position to progress to the Super Eights, probably with the hosts.

Ireland were coasting to victory at 113-5 but the 35th over of the innings bowled by Rao Iftikhar included two wickets and that created a tense finale.

Pakistan were earlier dismissed for just 132 in 45.4 overs as seamer Boyd Rankin claimed 3-32, including 13 wides. Pakistan's top scorer was extras with 29.

Ireland tied their first match with Zimbabwe on Thursday.

Which means Pakistan is out of this world cup , unless windies lose to zimbabawe and ireland.

Remember in 83 India came to the Worldcup as minnows even Rhodesia was considered better than us. Now it is the turn of the Bangals. They might pull out a significant upset this world cup.

Now, also look at the prospects seeing Ireland going on to play around 6 games in the super 8.

It's all funny. considering the fact that till recently minnows were all ridiculed for being part of such an significant tournament. Mr Ponting has to eat some words of his.

It is now become a matter of luck for India. Ifs and Buts will decide if India moves on to the next Round. Should India has to go into the world cup, Bangladesh has to loose both the games (chances of that is bleak I must say), India has to win both the games and that too with a huge margin.

biggest losers will be the sponsors and the county as a whole. all the sponsors are from India, they spend billions and billions of rupees in sponsorships and then go on to recover as in higher prices for their products. what a waste of money and time...

first you have to see such a crap...by paying to the cable walha, and then the whole county bears the cost of the entire tournament in which we perform like a bunch of jokers.

sachin who sachin nahi raha. badal gaya hai, he does not have that same aggression with which he used to play. he plays with so much caution that he does not score at all. he is no more important to us, we would not even notice if he does not play any more. he should retire along with dravid and ganguly. shewag should not retire - he should be kicked out.
