Clarification: The report ‘Portability demand outstrips new users’ published by TOI on Nov 8 was factually inaccurate in reporting that 18.1 million subscribers requested number portability in August 2011. This figure actually pertains to the total cumulative requests received since November 25, 2010 when mobile number portability (MNP) was launched in India. The real picture, therefore, is quite the opposite. MNP in India is still stuttering and hasn’t yet taken off. We apologize for the error.
New Delhi: Mobile number portability (MNP) doesn’t just appear to be a damp squib, it is one. The number of requests received for MNP since it was launched in November 2010 reached only 18.1 million till August 2011 — 9 months after it was launched in November 2010 — a mere 2% of India’s wireless base of 865.71 million.
