Reports suggest that the mobile number portability system is becoming highly popular among the mobile users in India. The number of requests for mobile number portability has increased nearly threefold as compared to the new users. The whopping surge in MNP requests is expected to play a key role in changing market shares for operators in near future.

Clarification: The report ‘Portability demand outstrips new users’ published by TOI on Nov 8 was factually inaccurate in reporting that 18.1 million subscribers requested number portability in August 2011. This figure actually pertains to the total cumulative requests received since November 25, 2010 when mobile number portability (MNP) was launched in India. The real picture, therefore, is quite the opposite. MNP in India is still stuttering and hasn’t yet taken off. We apologize for the error.

The number of requests received for MNP since it was launched in November 2010 reached only 18.1 million till August 2011 — 9 months after it was launched in November 2010 — a mere 2% of India’s wireless base of 865.71 million.
