Default Check for file existence in a remote machine

Hi Guys.

Is there a way, I can check for the existence of a file in a remote machine, without trying to bring it to local system?

Right now, I am using a UNIX shell script to connect to the remote machine using FTP and getting the file, and checking its existence in the local system.

If there is a way, pls provide me the shell scripting also.

Thnx
