Default cant login to oracle sql *iplus...

i just custom installed oracle 9i at home. using windows XP. i dont know anything about why its used or how its used. im really new to this. i need it as we use it to create tables in my college. i have installed sql * iplus but when i try to login... i dont know what username and password to give... i never earlier told me to create a userid/pw. it just asked for some two fields(i dont rem what they were). and i entered nikhil.ck and nikhil.
now when i try to insert the default userid and password-system/manager. login fails.. i get a protocol adaptor error.. what mistake am i making here??

AFAIK, you need to start the TNS listner. Must be a Windows service, I guess.
