Mic not working

I own a HCL beanstalk with P4, onboard sound, with Line In, Line 2.

Whenever i use any recording program and a song is playing in background, the playing song item gets recorded, but if i connect the mic, no sound is captured from the mic. What's da probelm. HELP ME OUTTA THIS!!!

Change the "Recording Source" to Mic, in the Audio Recorder Software. And, right-click the Speaker icon in the System Tray and click "Open Volume Controls". Here go to Options> Properties, and select the "Recording" radio button. Then make sure that "Mic" is selected/checked in the "Show the followin volume controls" box. Then click OK. In the main window, move the "Mic" volume slider to max, and if there is any option called "Select" below the slider you check it, or if there is an option called "Mute", you uncheck it. Then try to record through mic.

This is what isn't working. Morevoer can I do it in Sound Recorder??
