Default Help - Folder wih no name !

Hi

Can anyone help to remove this peculiar folder on my desktop? - It does not have a name.
My system is a Compaq P III 933 Mhz, 128 MB RAM, on Windows ME
It appeared on the desktop after I had to reinstall my OS – Re-installing again does not remove it.
Nothing happens when I select the folder and hits delete, and cant drag it to the recycle bin
On double clicking I get the message – "This file does not have a program associated ……..". Right clicking gives only "open" and "create shortcut" options. Create shortcut gives the message that disk is full and windows cannot create the shortcut.

Anyone has any ideas ?

Thanks,

Go to Dos and check if the folder has any special characters in its name

Normally folders created in dos and named using special characters show the characteristics u have specified

Guess it could be that

If it is that i can help u with the special characters.

Cant really explain it's sudden appearence.

Is it causing any problems ???

Should not be one made in real dos as it appeared on its own.
Had it been one ,he would ve got the message 'The file or folder you specified does not exist.... check the path.. ' etc n crap.
Or someone played a joke on him.
If ya have a multi boot system then just browse to ../windows/desktop
in XP or linux n deleate it if it actually is a folder.
Or empty ur desktop boot using a msdos startdisk n give the command deltree c:\windows\desktop.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion
But Dos does not list this file at all - as a file or directory
It lists only one other folder which i have on the desktop
It appears to be some sort of system folder - when i try to drag it to my other folder i get the message - "you cannot move or copy this item to this location. want to create a short cut instead?." - the same as when we try to drag My doc or My computer to a folder. Only difference is , you can create a shortcut for Eg. MY doc, but not for this "nameless" folder

and No, it's not creating any problems, except it just won't go away !

could be that u installled some software...
check your startup... Start>Run>msconfig and hit enter. go to the startup tab and try to post all the entries written on it.
go to cmd prompt and then to the desktop. type "attrib -r-h-s *.* " and press enter... that should show u the file. check what extension it is...
third... check your autoexec.bat file for any pranks.

It is integrated in windows n installs as default.
But dont think dcw would be of any help for you
cos what it does is manage shortcuts on the destop(Dealete or move to folder).

get tweakui for win9x and try to remove icon fron desktop

also goto folder options and select to show all files including operating systems protected fiile. also show extension of known files.

now check for the folder.

also if u have multiple profiles, search for folder in ur profile's desktop and also in shared desktop.

Yeah
Do that.
Maybe after unhiding the extention u may
know that its a damaged file which windows is incorrectly reporting as
a folder.
Did you have any power failures recently.
Also regutarly run ndd or scandisk to correct filesystem errors.
