1) Pausing live TV will work if the software supports it (most probably it will). But don't think of it as working in sync with the cable connection. When you pause live TV, the s/w starts recording the show on your HDD with with a time lag. So What you will actually be watching won't be a live broadcast, it will be a show with a time lag (of maybe 5-10 sec). So when you pause, the recording goes on in the background, and when you press play again, it will resume. Hope you got it.
2) Regarding ad-skipping, even though I have never tried it coz my TV tuner went bust, you could try out the instructions on this site:
