External Hard Disk

I want to have an external hard disk with USB interface. A hardware seller gave me three options:


1. To get a seagate 2.5 Gb USB hard disk . But this is very costly ay about 8000. So this option is ruled out.

2. To have a normal hard disk and use a HDD casing which will covenvert it to USB interface.

3. To have a laptop hard disk and use a HDD casing which will covenvert it to USB interface.


I want to know that what is the cost for HDD casing for both normal and laptop HDD ??

Also the casing with normal HDD would require a separate power supply or draw power from the USB ??

which one is a better option in your opinion ?

External enclosures for 3.5" HD's do require external power. Not sure about 2.5" (laptop) HD though.

An external HD is a better choice due to better build quality, but much more expensive than enclosures.

Enclosures are versatile. Get a 5.25" casing and use it for HD's as well as optical drives.

i`m using a 3.5' external enclosure for my 80gb pata hdd... the enclousure is usb 2.0.. so very fast data transfers!!
and it`s great.. got the enclousure after several minutes of bargain for 650bucks! fro lanington road..
but ya its a bit loose.. but as long as it does the work for me.. its great...
but be careful to not move the hard disk when in operation.. plus the hard disk does tend to become very very hot
ya getting a 5.25' enclosure makes sense cause it provides the extra room for supposed air flow for a hard disk. ..
i inquired at lamington raod around 4 days back . the cost was i think around 2k. .. but the case looked very sturdy indeed..

the chinese make and intex enclosures retails around 600 rs.....the bafo one is around 1200-1300 rs...but it is really orth it's price...i am talking about 2.5" casings....doesnot requires power supply...using one right now...

I got a external hdd case + travel set + cord made by transent (sp ?) for Rs 3000 the build quality is very good and was very well designed. The hdd option was any laptop hdd so i picked up a hitachi 40G disk for Rs6500/- Thats it its USB 2 connectivity never makes me feel that its an external HDD and I am able to shift all project work between college and home.

I am using 5.25" casing with 80 GB PatA Costed 4.2K
it gives optimal performance, transfer speed of l GB per min

3.5' are costly and slow Compared to 5.25"

This is not there be cause niether it would fit the casing nor it would Run 8) .

2.5GB USB Drive for 8k??? Are you sure??? Or was it a thumb drive or something. Just look for regular External drives that connect using a USB cable. I know that 160GB external drives are available for around $150 here so even if you scale it up for Indian prices, they should be around 9-10k. Correct me if I'm wrong about these prices.

Or as others have suggested, you could get an internal drive and put a case around it and use it as an external drive. This arrangement will be much cheaper than getting an actual external drive. And yes, you will need power for all of them. A laptop HDD will have a smaller case but will cost more than a desktop HDD with the same features.

if in that HDD Casing can we connect our Optical Drive or CD\DVD Writer
and use that Writer for writing CD\DVD.

Also did not get that no power supply required does it mean that
it drivers power from USB port.

Can you suggest me those case brands that cost for less than 1000Rs
and available at Lamington.

but i have heard of hdd cases that also allow connectivity with
optical drives can some one with the case try connecting there Optical
drive to the case [Not forcing anyone its upto you ]

this think is not ent for regular users

while using this u will haveto keep the IDE device in open which s nt at all safe

and they cost a bomb around $50

$50 in not much its ok for the features it offer but can you let me
know that are these available here.

i dont matter if hdd is outside i cantake care of it.
