Default HDD Size Shown is less then actual

hi,
recently my HDD was showing that there is not enough memory for installation of new softwares. well, as i saw, i deleted about 2 GB of data to solve this problem, then also, it shows the same blank space. what is really happening???

earlier also i had the same problem and i directly formatted it. now i cant as i have lots of data.

well, as per security, i have avast home edition (latest updates on) and lavasoft adaware.

is this virual problem or just a worm that takes up space without actually being displayed in the actual status??

pls suggest to cure this problem.
