Close ALL open windows, browsers, applications and run HijackThis, and click the button Do a system scan only. Then select red entries and click Fix.
Did you run TrojanHunter? If not, run it and scan full system.

It is a FALSE positive! McAfee has some probelms with the latest version of HijackThis. Updating McAfee would solve the problem.
Btw, post the log again, let's make sure that it's clean.

Hi swatkat,
I scanned my computer with trial version of Anti Trijal Elite from www.remove-trojan.com and it said that I haev a trojan in my computer. But since it is a trial version, it neither shows the location of the trojan nor removes it...........
I recently found a file gendel32.exe in the root directory c:\ and suspected it to be a trojan and asked the geeks here............ They said that it is a trojan and I deleted it. It hasn't reappeared but I'm not sure..........
I have a Hijack This log file but I don't know what it means. All programs look familiar but not sure about the registry entries. Please help me out............

Go to Add/Remove Prpgrams and uninstall this software, if it's present:-
Advanced System Optimizer
Then run HijackThis and click Do a system scan only. After this select the red entries above. Then close ALL the open windows, programs, adn this browser window too, and click "Fix" in HijackThis.
After this, delete this file:-
IEHelper.dll
and this folder Advanced System Optimizer, if you can find them.
Then, download these tools and install them:-
CCleaner
SpyBot SnD
TrojanHunter Trial
CCleaner --> Click "Options" button and here go to "Settings" tab and uncheck the option "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours". Click OK to exit from the Options. Finally click "Run Cleaner"
SpyBot SnD --> Go to "Mode" menu and click "Advanced". Then "Settings" tab in the left pane, and click "File Sets" and here select the file set named "Usage Tracking" and "Tracks.uti". Then click "SpyBot S&D" button in the left pane and click "Check For Problems"
TrojanHunter --> Select all the Hard Disk partitions and click "Full Scan".

Hmm...You have SE.DLL, About:Blank homepage hijacker, that's why they keep coming back. This is one of the toughest Hijacker!!!
For this, follow these instructions:-
Go to Start> Run and type regedit and press ENTER. Here navigate to this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run\ and select this branch by clicking on it. Then go to File Menu and click Export. Then type a filename as LocalRun and then click Save.
Similarly, navigate to this key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run\ and export it too with a file name UserRun.
Similarly, navigate to this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and click it and export it with a filename UserMain.
Navigate to this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and export it with file name LocalMain.
Then open NotePad, and click File> Open, here navigate to the path where the above files are save, and then in the Files of type box change it to Show all files. Then open the file LocaRun.reg and copy it's contents and post it here.
Similarly, open all the above files and copy-paste their content here.
Also, do a search (using Windows Search feature) in your PC for these files:-
extract.exe
se.exe
systb.exe
wdskctl.exe
wupdt.exe
winserv.exe
se.dll
(Search ALL files and folders, including hidden).

Hi Swatkat,
I had to reinstall XP because I had many other problems too............ forget it..........
Anyways, I have reinstalled XP and many other programs (including Advanced System Optimizer but deleted the IEhelper.dll as son as the installation was complete, What is its function anyway) and I suspect an infection again. I have an empty folder in C:\Program Files\ called xerox which has another subfolder nwwia but has no files in it (no hidden files, nothing). So I tried to delete it. But when i try to do so, i get an error:
Cannot delete nwwia: It is being used by another person (i have a single user PC, no networking, no any other users) or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
I end-tasked explorer and deleted the folder using command prompt, but when I restarted explorer, some command prompt popped up and the folder was recreated.
Must be some program.................... I don't remember when I started having this problem (must have been today, I installed all the programs today).
Here is the list of installed programs. Could you tell me which one may be causing this??
Plus, I have the your favourite HijackThis Log file. Here it goes:

Nothing much wrong in the log, except the Serial2K, what is that software?
Others are legit Windows files.
I suggest you to unisntall that software and then delete the folder.
Also, that Xerox folder comes with Windows XP, and you can not see the files because it's OS protected files.

Before you do this, backup the Registry, as described here
BOOT IN SAFE MODE
Go to Start> Run and type regedit and press ENTER.
Then navigate to this key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] and click on it to select it. Then it will disply some VALUES in the right side pane.
There, delete these values, by right clicking them and choosing "Delete":-
"Search Page"="about:blank"
"Start Page"="about:blank"
"Search Bar"="res://C:\\DOCUME~1\\Owner\\LOCALS~1\\Temp\\se.dll/spage.html"
"HOMEOldSP"="about:blank"
"Use Search Asst"="no"
"Use Custom Search URL"=dword:00000001
localrun----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Navigate to this key, [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run] and click it to select it. Then it will display some values on the Right side pane.
Among them, right-click on these and click "Delete":-
"sp"="rundll32 C:\\DOCUME~1\\Owner\\LOCALS~1\\Temp\\se.dll,DllIns tall"
usermain------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Similarly navigate here, [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run] and click it.
Then delete the below value.
"sp"="rundll32 C:\\DOCUME~1\\Owner\\LOCALS~1\\Temp\\se.dll,DllIns tall"
Delete SE.DLL file and run CCLeaner.
Then reboot to Normal Mode. Post a FRESH HijackThis log.

Ok, no need of it. Do this instead of the steps provided in that link.
Go to Start> Run and type regedit and press ENTER.
The go to Registry Menu, and then select the Export Range as All and type a file name as RegBakup and press Ok.
After this, boot in safe mode and then perform the steps provided in my previous post.

no offence bharathbala, but did u read the symantec page completely? it was mentioned in that page that the rogue smss.exe will reside as %windir%\smss.exe - i.e. in the windows directory, not in the system32 directory.
furthermore, dllhost.exe is also not any bad process. its also important

going further, i dont see the reason as to why u shud advice that notepad.exe should be terminated. the notepad.exe u highlighted is a valid process because it is in the system32 directory. most probably, it was running because HJT wud've opened it to show the log file. before u had asked him to fix the process, u should have asked him to check for symptoms shown on that webpage u posted.
and finally, just for information, ctfmon.exe, although not an essential process, its not a malware.
