Longhorn details revealed
Jim Allchin has revealed some Longhorn features in his interview to PCmag.com. Some excerpts:
Microsoft's design goals for Longhorn focus on six key points:
1. It just works
2. Safe and secure
3. Easy to deploy and manage
4. Client experiences—at work, at home, and on the go
5. The right server for your business
6. OS platform for the next ten years
Internet Explorer would run in a "containment area," unlike standard applications, making it even harder for malicious applications to end up on your system
Longhorn will have secure start-up, using Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to lock the hardware and software and maintain outgoing and incoming firewalls. System restore will now include user data as well, and there will be a new backup system to protect your data
top-to-bottom Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) support for companies that want to support it. And the operating system will support both 32-bit and 64-bit applications
new Windows Explorer, which shows previews of documents instead of icons and lets you search "anything that can be indexed," including search folders that the user can set. It's designed for a full-context search of all the data on your computer, and allows you to sort the results by all sorts of queries

I guess that would depend on wat your simple computer specifications would be. But I found this interesting bit of info which I think you might want to read....

The big news this week will be Microsoft's unveiling of Longhorn's system requirements, which are expected to be far more realistic than any earlier Windows requirements. "We are going to provide some broad guidance to hardware manufacturers about the kind of systems that will be great Longhorn systems," Lead Program Manager Greg Sullivan said. Analysts expect minimum requirements to start with a 4GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM, built-in wireless networking, and a DirectX 9-capable 3D accelerator with at least 128MB of RAM. But the recommended system could be far more powerful; either way, the requirements will likely exceed the capabilities of any PC system that's available today.

Now in the above please note the phrase "We are going to provide some broad guidance to hardware manufacturers about the kind of systems that will be great Longhorn systems" , I guess that a PC would perform from anywhere between good to poor based on what ya got under the hood of your CPU .
Although I have found that usually computer manufacturers mainly build their PC'S based on the "Windows Norm" ( Well at least thats what I have seen previously in US...
Some of the other threads which might have more useful information about Longhorn on this board...

....and the many of others which you can find by using the search function..

I don't think WinFS will be launched with Longhorn !!
And these days 512 MB RAM is fast becoming standard between Indians.
I love 512 MB my PC works smooth, no hiccups !!
Going to Upgrade my RAM by double in a month or two

WPA in XP is not a joke(completely). MS know piracy cannot be removed completely. WPA is just a way of reducing piracy to certain extent.
I hope Longhorn will be a better by MS and as kannan stated, 512 megs of RAM is will be normal.

Atleast, we Indians don't need to upgrade(financially) our OS. I mean,a Rs.100 pirated CD(or some tech-friend) is all it takes for us to upgrade our softwares.
