WinXP setup when started from DOS mode (using i386\winnt.exe) copies lot of files before installation starts. SMART DRIVE is a disk caching tool which speeds up file copy process in DOS mode.

When you start WinXP setup by booting into the CD-ROM with original boot sector, smart drive is loaded automatically, but when u start the setup from DOS mode, or with bootable cd having DOS floppy boot sector which, then calls Winnt.exe from autoexec.bat of DOS floppy, you need to load SMART DRIVE manually.

More info about smart drive SMART DRIVE

Get your smartdrv.exe from Win98, copy it to floppy.
To install WinXP now issue following commands.
Code:
A:\smartdrv.exe
G:\i386\winnt.exe
