WHY?! You can partition yourself! Why even pay 10 bucks to someone to do it?

If you get it with Vista, you can partition it yourself, in less than a minute. It is daylight robbery to charge Rs.516 just to partition a drive!

Lemme put this as politely as I can,

No one in their right mind would pay for partitioning.

Just get the darn thing shipped and DYI,
Or ask a friend who's more , say , technically inclined to do it , if you cant.

No need to pay that money. Here's how you can do it yourself in Vista(as its shipping with the laptop):

How much is the backpack for? If it is anything more than 1K do not buy the dell one. If you dont mind the brand.. you can get good quality backpacks for about 1K.

If we didnt pay extra for partitioning, then how come the lappy come with an OS[that we payed already]?
How will they be able to **** the OS if we didnt choose to partition?

And will we get any backup of OS on disc/installation disc?
How will we be able to reinstall the OS?

ANd can we install XP on a dell XPS which comes with Vista without voiding the warranty?
I was about to get the XPS 1530, but was confused with the above doubts.

It comes with a default partition with 100% of space allocated

Yes, Dell provides the OS disks and the driver disk (for Vista)

You can install Win XP and download all the drivers from the Dell website. It does not void warranty

Suggestion - opt for Vista Business when ordering. You will have the option to downgrade to XP Pro licenced version for free and you can switch back to Vista Business if you want, at any time. It means you have a choice between two OSes but you are paying just for one.

So we will have to resize the partition w/o losing the data. I think Partition Magic 8 will do the job. But why cant they just set primary partition at 30~40 GB nd leave remaining unpartitioned. ?

^^ Why need partition magic? You can do that without any 3rd party app in vista. refer to my post above for that.

@narangz
when u say "Dell itself charges that for partitioning" i am sure it isnt a rule made by Michael Dell. So its definitely some idiot sitting here in some of the rented office who has told his subordinates to take a beautiful printout of the schemes available and the fancy rates for the so called "partitioning Rs 516.00".
This is totally insane and if ur not a fan of this dell brand i suggest chuck it and speak it on there face that u r going for some other better trustworthy brand.
AAj kal waise bhi 1980 wala jamana nahin hai ki sirf Philips hee achha brand hai.... Uske allawa kya loon.

+1. Its worth it. I know how i shrinked Vista partion to 40GB . Vista's inbuilt partition utility is incapable to shrink the System partition beyond certain limits.
I manage to do it with Gparted in second go. First try was unsuccessful and got my vista parttion corrupted. Thank god i was able to recover it by CHKDisk

Besides there are chances of losing data in shrinking partiton if something goes wrong.

I agree with iMav here...

cos Dell has mediadirect and other crap partitions... If you dont want to bother with that then just pay the .5k... or if you are confident of doing it and dont mind taking risks, then dont pay....

I will re-install the OS as soon as I get the laptop. So there is no chance of data corruption.

PS:: If Vista inbuilt partition tool fails.
