i am not aware of such problems arisin with SATA optical drives [even DIGIT did not report any in their test conducted this month]
havin siad this, if you are a home user with the normal requirements of a home user, i really don't see any harm in pruchsin a PATA either
performs reliably at acceptable speed, costs not very different, may not perform as fast but that shud not b a very big factor as long as you have a
perfectly burnt disk
