i am not aware of such problems arisin with SATA optical drives [even DIGIT did not report any in their test conducted this month]

havin siad this, if you are a home user with the normal requirements of a home user, i really don't see any harm in pruchsin a PATA either
performs reliably at acceptable speed, costs not very different, may not perform as fast but that shud not b a very big factor as long as you have a perfectly burnt disk

d00d that has got NOTHING to do with any problem with with the PATA drive but it occurs when you you try to use a faulty disk

It doesnt really matter.
Getting a sata ODD will not give you more speed...because even with the fastest sata writer..PATA can still deliver more than twice the bandwidth needed. But yes...when we have 52x dvd writers available (if at all )in the market..then sata becomes the only viable option

In fact I would say go for sata..but not for speed...but for
1.less cable clutter due to thinner sata wires
2.No master slave channeling
3.Samsung Sata drives costs less than pata now...

yes its a problem as one cant boot due to missing SATA driver under XP... but all BIOS now days allow u to emulate the SATA as IDE

anyway I prefer PATA as there are no speed increase in because of SATA and later on we can increase HDD many mobo comes with 4 SATA port, no meaning of blocking one port with a DVD RW drive

its not just PATA is old but every new mobo nowadys comes with single IDE connector.
So for upgraders its really a problem as they do sometimes have old IDE HDD so couple with that if you gonna buy a PATA writer you may end up with either slowing down the IDE channel or even run out of connecting slots.
