Re: Format & Install ???
nothin wron with choosing either option
just dat if u doin it with d XP CD u have the option of creating and formattin NTFS partitions
not possible 2 do dat with a 98 boot floppy-only FAT32 possible with this
also if ur parition is gr8ter than 32GB u will not b able 2 use d 98 floppy

now u r making no sense at all
wat is the connection between formatting a HDD and copying files to the HDD
if ur aim is 2 copy the XP setup files to the HDD, how will formatting ur HDD with a '98 make any difference to the copying speed from the CD
n e way copying files to the HDD does not depend on what program u have used to format d isk as long as u have formatted it properlt [proof of job well done: you r able to access the dive and cre8/copy/cut files to the drive without any error messages]

Formatting with the same settings is same regardless of the way you format.

the speed of that copying has got nothing to do with the method u have used to format the HDD earlier
if ur drive spped is slow or the disk u usin to install the OS is scratched, then it is bound to take longer time to copy
if speed is what u want then best method is to copy the setup files on2 some other drive of the HDD b4 u format the other drive [where u wan2 install d OS] and start the install running the winnt.exe file from that location

Re: Format & Install ???
Why would anyone wanna maintain a floppy? Its boot image can be extracted and burnt to a bootable CD. Plus you can also add many DOS based diagnostic utilities. So that way you get the advantage of using a floppy for booting into DOS mode and many utilties. You can even run windows setup from HDD that way to speed up the copying process

Re: Format & Install ???
Works or doesn't for your setup I dunno. Just commented that floppies are passe. The boot image can be burnt on CD and all the things can be had via the CD too (booting in to dos mode etc.)

Re: Format & Install ???
a image of a bootable floppy created on a CD emulates the environment of a floppy.
the files on a bootable floppy are coded to operate under archtecture specifice to a floppy - its space, data transfer speed, its tracks, sectors arrangement etc. It is obviously different from that of a HDD
So altho we know that the disk is a CD, the files in the boot image operate in an environment emulating a floppy, so they can perform without issues

Re: Format & Install ???
Use a bootable discs with Partition magic. U can easily boot into it nd can perform formating, repartitioning, merging, resizing all these w/o ny problem at vesy faster rate than the winxp or win98 bootable disc.
And also i think u can't format sata HDDs using a bootable floppy. Ivent tried as ive no floppy drive.
And why not make a bootable to DOS CD and use command prompt to format the partitions using fdisk? but maynot work with ntfs partitions.

Re: Format & Install ???
If formatting and partitioning is the only job then use GPartED. Nothing better than it! Its a bootable partition manager and can handle everything!
