Wait for SantaRosa Refresh, it will be announced next week with product availability scheduled for late-Jan or early-Feb. The existing laptop range from all laptop players will be updated for the new platform and use the Penryn-based mobile Core 2 Duos. Whatever you buy right now, the delivery will take 2 weeks. So, basically, what you buy will get outdated before you use it.

It makes sense to wait a month and then buy it. The model you should be looking for is XPS M1530 only. Specs and pricing although similar, would be a little bit on the higher side at launch. (Here I presume Dell will update XPS M1530 with Penryn Core 2 Duo immediately.)

But you should be considering it with specs like Core 2 Duo T8100, 2GB RAM and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT. Unfortunately, it seems like the SantaRosa Refresh laptops will continue to use DDR2 667MHz RAMs in the first half of 2008. Hopefully, that would change with Montevina platform in second-half 2008.
You could think I'm wrong, but that's no reason to stop thinking.

You could try the MacBook if you want something immidiately, as it has rather excelent eye candy. But it looses hands down to a dell XPS machine. If you want a high performance vs cost ratio, I recomend you the compaq v6608 laptop. Buy it, then add upgrades like a graphics card, 800 mhz ram, etc. This will give you much more value than dell systems.

But I think for long term use its advisable to wait another year for the Turion Ultra, or the AMD Puma platform, which promises to give quad core proccys with one core being a radeon GPU. It will definitely result in a huge reduction in cost and a huge increase in performance, along with a huge increase in battery life.

Another important thing you need to decide is if you really need a huge screen. For laptops, 13.3" is more than enough. So saving costs by going for a model with 13.3 or 14" screen instead of a 17" or 19" screen is a good idea. Just think over it.

Also, Dell laptops rob us. They charge huge prices for components that are dirt cheap in the market. It is hence advicable to go for a laptop thats hugely upgradable, with a low config, so that for a little bit of cash you can pump up its performance. For example, dell asks Rs. 5000 for an upgrade form one gb to two in a laptop, while the market price is only rs. 1500.

8600M GT is also over asked for. So a motherboard with a slot for a graphic card but with no pre provided card is advised.

    I want a 15" screen. I want a good performer with sexy looks (<60k)
Suggest me alternates to XPS 1530 customized. Also how good will be the next launch of class (Montevina) when it will be launched in May 2008? Man I am not able to decide to buy one or can i wait for that future launch? Clarification of the performance of new launches will help.

Montevina is atleast 6-8 months away. Also it ll be very costly when it launches as it ll support ddr3 ram and have x4500 onboard gfx. Wait for some more time for the Santa Rosa Refresh and then get the xps 1530.

well, as many pointed out, I too will like to say one thing: Computers are undergoing a major platform upgrade. Every company is going to switch to a new system in the next 1.5 years, and PCs purchased in this period will fast become obsolete.

and as for the new hype over Dx 10.1 cards, just wait for the OpenGL Version 3 to be released and its cards to come out if you want to see the meaning of platform upgrades
