optical drive

i have a DVD and CD drive on secondary IDE controller..running on winxp machine..from past few days. when i used to boot my system.every thing get start normally till 4 to 5 mins and suddenlly DVD led get on and both cd and dvd drive used to disapper from explorer..things get normall if i shut down my system for a hour and do a reboot..but in case i need to rebbot instantlly i need to plug out data and power cable to get things works..!
i am clue less.. watts the hell this is?

Connect only one of the drives and just check if the problem occurs as such. Also try replacing your data cable.

there is a loose connection, usuall this happens when power cable is loose. may be on of the pin or so. remove them and put it back firmly also see if the plugs are in normal condition. ( i mean the hole shd not be bigger than it should be). if all these are fine then check with your SMPS if its older n giving variable voltage...
