Default Where is my disk space?.

Hi,
I am usigng windos XP ( also with suse linux ), and I installed it in C drive and the size is around 3.89 GB. I never installed any other programs in C drive so I think this is enough.
The problems is:
The following folders are in C ( toatal space = 3.89 GB)
Documents and settings => 245MB
Program Files => 457 MB
WINDOWS => 1.82 GB

So the total 2.5 GB is used, but when I am looking the C drives properties it shows as 3.15 GB is used and only 759 MB free!!, Where is remaing ?( ie 3.89 - 2.5 ).

First off, go to Tools>Folder Options>View and then select "Show all files and folders" and then check out your C: drive again. And get a tool like DiskTective:
http://www.freebyte.com/disktective/

That will show you exactly how your drive space is being used, by which folder and file, etc. Plus, the Windows pagefile will also take up a considerable amount of free space on your C: if you haven't changed the default drive it uses. You can see more such files by going to Tools>Folder Options>View and unchecking "Hide protected Operating System files"

Sometimes windows displays incorrect disk space.
try running scandisk /checkdisk to correct it .

the space has probably been taken up by
1. swap file (pagefile.sys)
2. Old System restore Files
3. Old chkdsk files
4. and if you have hibernate option enabled ..then it used some space too (hiberfil.sys)

To create space ...
1. you can move swap file elswhere on your HDD
2. Disable system restore or delete old restore points..
3. run disk cleanup to remove temp files and old chkdsk files.
4. disable hibernate option and delete the above file(hiberfil.sys) manually if it is not automatically deleted..

Hope your querry is solved..

Using Windows over a period of time will lead to loss of disk space.
This loss is due 2 many reasons such as hitesh_hg mentioned.
It is normal for Windows 2 report loss of space but it is a concern if the loss rate is ALARMING !
Check out ur comp for spyware and viruses and other stinkin stuff that can (I read this somewhere) lead 2 enormous loss of Disk space !

To show pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys, you need to uncheck the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" option in Tools>Folder Options>View. However, if you use the Hibernate function, keep the file and the setting, but move the pagefile to another drive. Right click the My Computer icon, select Properties>Advanced and under Performance, click the Settings button. Move to the Advanced page on the window that opens up, under Virutal Memory, click the Change button. On the window that lists all all available partitions, click the C:. and under "Paging File Size for selected drive", select the "No Paging File" radio button and then click the Set button.

Then select another partition, one that you have more space on (Preferably, if you have a second hard disk, select the first partition on it, otherwise select the one with the maximum free space) Click the "Custom Size" radio button and then select a value 2.5 times your RAM size (if your memory is 256MB then 2.5*256=640MB) and enter this value in the initial size and maximum size boxes, click Apply/OK and then restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
