Default File & Folder Erasing/Shredding???

Hi Guys!

I have seen lots of software that claim to erase data permanantly, There are many softwares who also claim to erase all unused space on the HDD thus making it unrecoverable. I do understand that merely deleting a file can always be recovered as it still exists on the HDD. What I dont understand is why do we need to rewrite the same space (incase of shredding a file) or the unused space space of the HDD so many number of times (35 times in case of Peter Gutman) when only writing once on that space should do the job.

Is it some marketing funda or is there some logic behind it.

Chao...
