It was seldom (if ever) really called PATA before. But when SATA drives came out, people wanted an easy way of telling the difference. SATA (Serial ATA) drives transfer data in series, one after the other. So since the older IDE drives transfer data as several bits travelling along separate data lines in parallel, they've come to be called PATA (P for parallel).
