Default DVD CD NOT RUN

Sometimes H colon for DVD-ROM appears after I click the Computer and sometimes not. Moreover, sometimes when I put a DVD CD and click H colon, the H colon disappears and the DVD CD does not run. What is actually the problem and how to rectify it?

What operating system do you use?
Have you installed any new cd writing software or virtual cd emulators?
Cos Deamon tools is known to have conflicts with cd writing software such as nero.
