Unable to Connect to SQL Server

When i try to connect to sql server i am receiving the message

Unable to Connect to server ....

Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General Network Error. Check Your Network Documentation.

i am having dual OS in my system. i have installed win 98 and XP. when i am working in 98 i am able to connect to sql server. but while working in xp, its not working and i receive the above message.

plz give me a solution.

i am using sql server 7.0 in my machine. whether i want ti install any service pack for sql server 7.0
