Default 64 Bit.. How many of you use it.

Now 64 Bit processors are available for more than 3-4 years, and new processors comming out from both AMD and Intel with dualcore and now Quad Core comming out. We also have 64 bit OS for XP, Vista, Linux, BSD, Mac OS X . I wanted to know if you guys find any speed/Performance improvement from using 64 Bit OS on 64 Bit Processors as compated to using 32 Bit OS. Mac OS X is optimised for the new Intel Macs so I dont think there will be much debate there.

Please post your experience.

Until you have good amount of everything, there wont be any speed enhancement. A 64bit installation typically needs double the ram & processing power than its 32bit counterpart in order to work "speedly".

^^ Yep considering people are going for 2GB RAM and C2D's now a days, I dont think there much problem regarding the "machine".

thats exactly why i didn't install it in the first place. i'd asked this question to the digit guys (and got the 'Que of the month' spot ), they recommended me not to try 64-bit OS due to poor app support

At last replies .. I dont have a 64 Bit Processor so wanted to know if what was claimed 2-3 years back regarding "The world will change to 64 Bits" had lived up to the expectation. Even we were speculating that Vista will only be released in 64 Bit version ( we did right? ).

Now a quick check at intel/nvidia website showed me that drivers are available for both 32bit and 64bit for xp/vista, so the drivers should not be a problem. But not so much luck for linux.

@koolbluez: I checked HP Printer Drivers. They have 64 Bit version drivers. So I expect the same from other printer manufacturers.

The problem which I see is that thirdparty companies are not providing 64 Bit applications. Also im not sure if Corel and Adobe have 64 Bit versions of their product.I took the example of Adobe and Corel because they have really powerfull softwares like Photoshop and Corel Draw, but I belive those are still 32 Bit applications, please correct me if I am wrong about it.

So the point is we have purchased 64 Bit Procy and also 64 Bit OS .. but we dont have enough 3rd party applications to run on the same

I use vista ultimate 32-bit and xp 64-bit , since it supports more than 3gb ram (currently having 4gb). And I work in maya(64-bit edition) so a 64-bit proccy does makes sense, better use all the resource at your disposal. No driver issue till date.
Also using xp since maya's mental ray has compatiblity issue with vista else would have gone with vista 64-bit.

If in this world we have pc games in the future then we will surely have to use 64bit OS as it supports more ram size.

Most of the big vendors now have 64 bit versions of their software too... but as u said they are a lil bit lesser common. Well, we have just been launced into the 64bit bandwagon... and so... need to wait patiently for all vendors to start providing it.
Adobe software run on 64bit Vista... see comments part of this blog
If u ever get any prob... just use an alternateware... or read on...
There is a WOW64 emulator which runs 32bit apps on Win64. The WOW64 subsystem is a lightweight translation layer that has similar interfaces on all 64-bit versions of Windows. Its primary purpose is to create a 32-bit environment that provides the interfaces required to allow 32-bit Windows apps to run unmodified in the 64-bit system. Technically, WOW64 is implemented using three DLLs: Wow64.dll, which is the core interface to the NT kernel that translates between 32-bit and 64-bit calls, including pointer and stack manipulations; Wow64win.dll, which provides the appropriate entry points for 32-bit apps; and Wow64cpu, which takes care of switching the processor from 32-bit to 64-bit mode.
Details on this link.

So, summin it... the Windows operating system introduces a very slim layer, implemented in a set of DLLs, to give 32-bit applications access to the 64-bit OS. This layer is called WOW64 (Windows-on-Windows 64-bit) and does all the magic necessary to make 32-bit applications feel good on 64-bit Windows.
WOW64 and the built-in support of 32-bit on the processor enable the execution of 32-bit application in a 64-bit Windows environment. If you are interested in more details about 32-bit application installation and execution, below I put some reference information.
