Default RAM help

hey guys,
i've got a intel 915gl mobo which operates on 768mb of ram. (one 512 and one 256). now i'm taking a 1gb module. since my mobo has only 2 ram slots i have to take out one module.

so i want to ask you guys a question: should i take a 1gb module so the total memory will be 1.5gb or should i take a 512mb module so i can rum both in dual channel memmory mode??

which one will be better??
