[URGENT]Connecting Two Computers

Hello members,

I have two computers running windows XP,I want to transfer files from one to another, how can I connect these computers using a LAN cable?

Already explained so many times...............Anyway I will explain again.

Hardware you need.
1) Cross climped LAN wire
2) LAN card on both PC.

Steps:
1) Connect the two PC using the LAN wire.
2)On any one of the PC
Start-->>control panel-->>Network connections

you will find Local Area Connection



3) Right click on my "local area connection"-->>properties-->>TCP/IP



5)Double click internet protocol (TCP/IP)

6) Make setting as shown below.



In another system ....just change the IP address to 192.168.1.3
and let other setting be the same.

In DNS server address you can enter any thing but should be same.I am using airtel broadband,so I have entered airtel server address.You can enter your own ISP server address..n thus you can share internet also.

For sharing file you need to run "Network Setup wizard".
Start-->>control panel-->>Network setup wizard.



Click next.



Click next



select 1 st option and click next.

Like this follow the instruction.

Run the "Network setup wizard " on your second PC also.Restart both computer.DoneNow you can share data between both PCs.

What is crossover LAN cable?
can I use patch cable? which comes bundled with DSL modems?

you cant use that wire.The LAN wire that comes with DSL is striaght climped.You need cross climped wire.

To use ur DSL LAN wire..you will need a HUB or switch in betwwen ur two PCs.

LAN wire is bundle of 8 wires covered by seperate colour.
straight climping-->>all eight wires are in same order on both side
crossed climped-->>just reverse of staight climping

just one correction..

between a private LAN u do not need to specify the gateway and DNS information. it does not help but may render the connection unusable.

Gateway is specified when there needs to be a communication outside ur local network.

DNS is applied when configuring internet access, so that ur pc can resolve urls like google.com and yahoo.com to their IPs to communicate.

In the above configuration the two PCs might not communicate as each will send its data to 192.168.1.1 for further forwarding, as is the work of a gateway, but since there is no 192.168.1.1 no data will reach its destination.

u need to keep he gateway and the DNS blank for a simple two PC communication.
