is Thermal paste really needed?

i recently buy a new motherboard and then installed my old Proccessor on it. My PC is working fine but someone told me that while installing CPU i must put thermal paste on it. I never used thermal paste and want to know the use of thermal paste, is it necessary to put thermal paste, from where can i get thermal paste and is thermal paste differ for diffrent processor.

thermal paste are a kind of white colred paste which have very high conductivity and transfers the heat from CPU to thew Heat Sink effectively.The fan on the heat sink drives out this heat and cools the Sink and this goes on continuosly

i don't think different cpu need different paste,i ofcourse used the transistor paste avilable to put on my CPU when the old paste was lost.

u can ask for it at any electronics shops (to say it comes as transistors paste )
or ask for it at any computer vendor
