no loss will occur.... but if tht's an indirect question...may be u wanna know how to make data on CDs unrecoverable.. then just do any one of the following: put them in to oven OR move a magnet over them for sometime while watching cartoons... ur data will be lost... HAHAHAHAHA

its optical media not magnetic nothing will happen to cd even if you put it over
a power plant dynamo.
btw cd will genrely not be harmed inside the water but it should be distilled as chlorine and other substance in water in water can react with aluminum compound based outer reflective surface to make cd unusable

Re: will any data loss occur if CD is kept under WATER?
Even humidity does damage CDs over time.
But what exactly is meant by the question?
Quote
"no Harm Under Tap Water!"
But tap water generally contains chlorine which is chemically very reactive.

Plastic is a very good water proof stuff, therefore, when going under water put cds in a plastic pack that will make sure no contact with water

What I mean to say is, once I had tried it with my CD's. I washed them out of their dirt under tap-water, and no data loss occurred.....

agreed the cd is made of plastic but the recording and reflectative surfaces are made of aliminium compounds which melts in the burning processos to make dents which are identical to pits of stamped CD now this cotaing can react with chlorine and other reactative substances in water and corrode making cd use less in some time if kept under water.

he is talking about keeping cd inside the water for extended period of time not
washing as its done only for a min or two.

CD might get cold.
jokes apart, no data loss will occur... In fact I wash old CDs sometimes to make them working. Even I hv used tooth-pastes a few times to fill the scratches...

Re: will any data loss occur if CD is kept under WATER?
5 years ago I heard a rumour that if the cd gets a lotta oil on it surface and the cdrom is unable to read it, then just wash it with shampoo!
I washed it with shampoo, and wonders.....the cd worked again!
So afaik "data loss wont occur if CD is kept under WATER"!

you may have done this on lower plastic part from which lens picks up and read
have you tried this on the top coated part of the cd (which is the reflective coating) if you put a CD in front of a light source and and you can see the light passing through the pores made by scratches or corrosion you cannot repair or use that cd normally (off course there are technics to repair those that but are beyond home users and only work for 40% of the cases)

Re: will any data loss occur if CD is kept under WATER?
although CD is made ot of plastic bout outer(aka data) layer is not exactly plastic , so technically it can get affected if kept under water for prolonged periods ?

, same here i normally use toothpaste or any soft(pH~7) soap to wash CD's . u can also wash your cd's with Milk as it decreases surface tension of Surface to extremely low levels thus u can wash out dust n other minute particles if ur cd's is badly scratched .
