Re: C drive dead ! ! !
if you have a FAT32 partition (if possible try to format C:\ as FAT32), try using a live CD like Knoppix to retrieve the data.

How does a partition seem to be dead? Is XP not getting installed at all ? what is happening when you boot using the install disc ? Any particular error ? Hangs ?
^^^ Above suggestion seems good.... I'd too suggest it. But, it'd be good if we can identify the problem and fix it....

U r very confusing - pls try to explain wht exactly happening, don't guess anything.
bad sectors may prevent u to install xp on c, but it can't be "dead"

Re: C drive dead ! ! !
Best option is to take out your hard drive and connect it to your frnd's computer (by setting it in slave ).
Check there and you should be able to retrieve the data you want..
BTW what do you mean by "dead" hard-drive

just copy paste the files/folders you want to recover onto the FAT32 drive., i suggested Knoppix because Ubuntu does not mount the drives while working with a Live CD.

^is the drive you're trying to copy onto a FAT32 formatted drive. it cannot write in a NTFS formatted drive.
