Sound Failure

My system configuration is Mercury 845 Motherboard with P4 1.7 GHz Processor and 128 MB DDR RAM. I use win98 and XP. I cannot play sounds on it. When tested with DirectX Diagnostics Tool it gave me the following Error. Can somebody please help me out.

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

- check if onboard sound is enabled in bios .
- check device manager if u have sound card listed in both OS
- try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers
