What is DDR433/466/500/533 , DDR only has a Max DDR400

Are they overclockable DDR400 modules
According to my knowledge DDR is max 400Mhz with BW3.2GB/s

But at Kingston and Corsair Sites i have seen
DDR433/466/500/533 with BW 3.5/3.7/4.0/4.3 GB/s respectively

Can we use these modules in the motherboard which has a Max DDR400
Eg . ASUS A8N-Sli

There do exist high frequency low latency peformance Rams.
They do work at rated frequencies.They are meant specifically for Overclockers who need to up the FSB to pump the clock speed.If the FSB is pumped synchronously with the Ram speed,the performance is best achieved.
This is the reason why there are Rams working at these speeds.

As you have mentioned,DDR400 is the max supported on modern mobos.

but these boards can hit fsb upto 300 mhz
which translates to 600mhz for the ram if run synchronously.

so i think you get it why DDR modules come in speeds of DDR433,466,500.....

Also these Rams have higher stock voltage.
Normal Ram,DDR266,333,400 has a default voltage of 2.6V but these rams generally work at 2.8V as default.They can easily go above 3.0V when OC'ing.

I hope this clarifies your doubts.

So i can use DDR433/466/500/533 on the ASUS A8N-Sli or any other
board that has support for DDR400 and supports overclocking.

So when we install these Rams by default do they intially work as
DDR 400 modules or as DDR433/466/500/533

Do we have to later adjust the settings in BIOS to recognize it as DDR433/466/500/533 or its automatically done.
I mean the voltage settings CAS settings etc..

Hi ,

DDR 433/533 etc does not mean enhanced version of DDR400 , 400 mhz is not the max , upto 533 nhz ram modules can be installed , and they actually work at the frequency at which they are marked .
So .

If you pump up the fsb , and match the DDR speeds ,its smooth as silk , also you have to make mannual adjustments for the DDR voltages as well as CAS latency timings , does that clearify your doubts ?

So that means i can use

All i have to do after insering the modules is change the settings in BIOS
to match those of the DDR433/466/500/533 modules and also match
the CAS Latency , RAS to CAS Delay , RAS Precharge , Act to Precharge
Delay and thats it.

Didnt find a equivalent ASUS Bios Pic so got hold of this for demonstaration.


So does that mean if i Enter this DDR433/466/500/533 modules on the
DDR400 supported Mobo they will run at 400Mhz only if not Tweaked through BIOS.

Well these sticks,when inserted will work @ 400 MHz speed.Once you start Overclocking will they reach their rated speeds.

So say you have a 3200+ [939] in A8N SLI,then when you insert this Ram it will work @400.In this situation, the clock speed is gonna be 2.0GHz.
Now when you up the FSB to say 220.It will make the CPu work @ 2.2GHz & the Ram will work @ 440 MHz if run synchronous to the FSB.
