Actaully, it doesnt depend upon the software much It depends upon the type of compression and the processor. 
People always try to get a good processor, this is place where processing power comes into pay like Compressing file, Ripping Music or Movie

Depends on the settings of the compressor. If you only want to archive multiple small files as a single big file ( Useful for transfering), use winrar with the mode as storage.
You also password protect ur file .

WinRAR is BEST mate but if u don't hv the money to buy it , 7zip rocks , n also it's 7z format seems to hv a slight edge over RAR format .
y go for somethin costly when u can get same performance for free .

i use both WinRAR and 7ZIP... 7zip is very usefull while uploading to web servers
but i have seen the size doesnt change much with WinRAR or 7zip... more or sell they compress in same rate

ZipGenius I think is the best. Since, it supports all known formats including RAR and 7Zip.
