Follow these steps:-
1]Go to Start>Run, and type regedt32.exe and press Enter
2]Then backup the Registr using Export Registry option in File menu
3]Then navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
4]There on the right sie pane, u will see an entry called Default, double click it and then type none and click OK and exit from Registry Editor.

i think u can backup these things (..System Restore?) using File Backup softwares, but u can do so using Disk Image back up softwares...
anyway try these file backup softwares before going to image backup softwares.....
EasyFileBackup Free
Argentum Backup
or this Image Backup software..
Norton Ghost
