Damaged CDs :Pls help!
Hi!
Many of my CDs are developing spots on them or their upper shiny layer worns out a bit.Their size isn't very big ,yet this is making them useless.I think it is because of excessive moisture in the surrounding. What can I do to prevent this? Is there any way I can copy the data of damaged CDs to HDD?

Re: Damaged CDs :Pls help!
well to prevent the spots forming in the first place you can use cd labels/stickers which are circular and paste them onto cds.what this does is,it forms another layer of protective surface and moisture doesnt come in contact with the shiny layer.
If you have already damaged the cds enough you can try data recovery software like isobuster where in you can copy/extract the contents to a folder of ur choice.Isobuster also allows skipping of non-readable areas.

Re: Damaged CDs :Pls help!
the stickers cost .50 paise or so.They are nothing much hi-fi ...just plain labels like how when we were kids we used to put labels with our names on the books..only the labels were rectangular ..these are circular. You will get them probably from local vcd wallas if he stocks blanks cd's along with movies. You will definately get them from vcd wallas who stock pirated movies.. because pirated vcd's require labels to be stuck onto them to display movie names ..

Re: Damaged CDs :Pls help!
Wet your hand a little bit and with this touch a CD. Or better, dip a cd in water for some time. After that, keep the CD for a week or two. You will find dots in the shape of a growing fungus appearing on the surface, and will gradually eat up the CD rendering the media useless.
The best way to prevent this is to dry the CD in the sun or under the fan for 5-20 minutes. Then, keep the CD in sealed plastic covers. This prevents the further entry of moisture.
Palms wet with sweat and and oil damages the CD easily.

@lucky_star ..even I have seen fingerprint shaped damage on one of my cds.I guess the sweat must have eaten away the surface.

Re: Damaged CDs :Pls help!
Yah, Just do an experiment by making an sweat-oil-combination finger print on the CD and see the changes happening to that spot.

Re: Damaged CDs :Pls help!
dude...i am not talking about sticking the labels on the underside..obviously the drive wont be able to read.I am saying sticking the labels on top of the cd where its written moserbaer, sony or whatever. One doesnt need to protect the underside as long as you dont scratch it...since its polycarbonate and doesnt succumb to rust or material degradation. If you read above the original poster's query was ...how to prevent the spots forming which by the way form only on the shiny layer(top layer).I hope now the point is clear.
