Webopedia extract
DvD is "Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc"
Therefore both are correct

It's versatile but was mainly devloped for storing high def video so also called video.. But when speaking technically it's versatile..
that the f i had read in my multimedia lectures few year ago

as far as i know, the term DVD originated as "Digital Video Disc", as it started off
as something which carried videos. but keeping in mind the versatility of the medium, i.e. it could be burnt with data as well, the term now followed is "digital versatile disc".
the 'ORIGINAL' movie dvds(as Vimal mehrotra might like to remind me) actually mean "digital Video discs", unlike their data variants.
