I'm not an proffesional but i'd say go for programming since big companies hire programmers for high rates like 50k+

If he gets placed while in campus, most likely, the company will decide which field he should work on. All of my friends who got campus placement (electronics & communication) are working as programmers. Some in Linux/Unix, some in embedded systems (C/C++), one in protocol development (for mobile phones), some in mainframe, some in .NET and some in Java.

In my opinion also, he should choose what he likes. If he is in first or second year, from my experience, he would realize what he likes by 6th or 7th semestter. By what he likes, I don't mean networking or programming, but something even more specific in any of these two or some other area.
