1]Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2]In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3]In the Performance pane, click Settings.
4]In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
5]In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
6]Change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value, click Set, and then click OK.
7]Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
Set virtual memory Minimum size twice the RAM.

Do as swatkat says

Also disable all those eye canies that XP comes with, reduces a lot of requirements.

1]Rght-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2]In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3]In the Performance pane, click Settings.
4]In the Performance Options dialog box, u get VISUAL EFFECTS
5]Check the adjust for best performance.
6]Click OK.

Reduce Your start up list
Run --> msconfig --> startup --> Disable all.

Restart

You will see a performance boost. and wont get a Virtual MEM too low msg

Actually my ram is 128 mb - 16 mb = 112
Initial size value is 168

press ctrl+alt+del to get the task mannager

Go to the prrocessor tab click on view menu and select column. there tick mark virtual mem. and mem usage
This will show u memory and virtual memmory used by each app.

Go to the performance chart there u see 2 graps first is cpu usage graph second is Page File(Virtual Mem Graph)

Then there is a box showing hysical memory stats. ie mem installed, current usage and free ram available

There is a Free RAM XP Pro freeware. Its an excellent utility to free up mem when u require

Optimally , the relation is, Initial Size+RAM>=500MB.
So in ur case as RAM is 128(112) MB, Set the initial size as some 400MB and Maximum Size can be anything between 700MB to 800MB.
Take a look at this page for more info.:-

Swap File is same as the Page File, which is the Virtual Memory.
So Swap File usage is Virtual Memory usage.
There's one tool to montior Page File in XP, called XP PageFile Monitor.
