Re: mental ray topics :-)
Well....first of all, go to cgtalk.com for mental ray or evermotion.org for Vray tutorials & basics
Mental ray depends compleately on the dimensions you use to make your scene, like i use centimters in the viewport & system of 3Ds Max, however, if u don't like i did ones, my scene was actully 15km in length, & photons were not showing at all. So first, make it a habit to model in correct dimensions. they should really bundle an optical physics book with mental ray
2nd, start with basic lights....I use the 3 point light setup, one key light, one fill light, & back light...
3rd, i will post tomorrow, right now going to sleep

Re: mental ray topics :-)
Sorry, was away
rajasekharan, you do one thing. Since there are two types of rednering & I m not familier with Maya anymore, i m telling u the method, you try that in your scenes, & see for yourself how it works. Use Maya 8 or 8.5 as they have Mray 3.5. I can tell u exectly everything in 3ds Max but not maya. You are better off visiting some threads on cgtalk.com for maya
1) Exterior scene
1 key light, mr area spot. This is the main shadow casting light, just apply this with no FG & GI, & position it according to the Shadow direction you want
Now, add one skylight to it, the normal one in maya, enable FG & go with draft profile with 2 FG bounce, render it...show it here, how it renders

Re: mental ray topics :-)
hey , thanks for it . . i am half way through with maya . been swinging between max and maya . the thing is how to fake a sky light in maya . i dont see a sky light there .
__________
well i use 3 point light , thats ok . . but did you look at the gnomon videos . the way they have done SSS thats what i fail to get . and ofcourse the HDRI effect that vray gives me . i cant replicate it in mental ray

Re: mental ray topics :-)
Well, i can tell u about max but no exp in maya now.
In 3ds max we have a "skylight", which u can create using create light control panel. Or u can use the mental ray 3.5 mr sky & mr sun, these should be in Maya too. There should be a skylight in maya too...check somewhere
I didn't see the gnomon videos....was not able to download them...do u have it?well, can u courier me the mental ray lightning & rendering dvd is possible?
to use SSS with mental ray, i simply use the SSS materials already given, add a key light & then modify the materials. It works mostly, confession : I suck in charectar modeling
