Default Help!!!!

This problem started when i received a msg on yahoo messenger, saying: "who is beside you in this pic ...so good-looking", foolishly i clicked on the msg... only to find my comp infected by some trojan or somethin.... my internet explorer homepage was permanently changed to "http://thecoolpics.net"... i then downloaded Ad Aware and Avast Antivirus, did the reqd checks, erased the trojans present, but the problem persisted. I had to shift my browser from ie to mozilla firefox. Also, Zone alarm firewall found programs "IEXPLORE.EXE" and PROJECT1 requesting access.Even now, wierd messages like the one above are randomly sent from not just my account, but from yahoo and windows messenger in general, meaning anyone who accesses their account from this comp. soon, the internet explorer icon vanished from the desktop, and i find myself not able to reach the registry or use the run command... the run command is not in the start menu nor is it found anywhere else, like in the properties of the taskbar...plz help!!! If any more info is reqd, do feel free to ask. I am using Windows XP.

First of all, remove the link you have given. It leads to a dangerous spyware site. I don't want members here to accidently get infected.

Solution:
1. Download:UnHookExec.inf right-click and 'Install'. This is a registry entry. It does not display any notice when you run it.
2. Restart PC

This will enable registry editing.

Next, Update the definitions of avast! and Ad aware and perform a complete scan of the system in "safe mode".

Run HijackThis tool in your system. It will give a report in a notepad. Copy and paste that entire report here for analysis.

^^
Fix these:

Code:
H:\softwares\kav6.0\avp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bin\svchost.exe
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://10.241.16.195/webLogin.jsp
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iKnowPS] H:\softwares\iKnowPS\iKnowPS.exe
O4 - Startup: HDDlife.lnk.disabled
O23 - Service: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 (AVP) - Kaspersky Lab - H:\softwares\kav6.0\avp.exe
I wonder why ur KAV is running from "H:\Softwares" folder?
Is it portable version of KAV? If u r sure about its entry, then don't fix it, otherwise fix it.

I have solved the project 1 problem.I went to C:/windows/bin and deleted the ctfmon file there because Project1 was initiated when I clicked that file[dont ask me how i got there,It was total fluke](I don't think it is the real ctfmon process file.)
after I deleted that file, project1 was gone and this also solved a problem in which my explorer and browser hung repeatedly.

Doing the scan now....

I have analysed the report...

Fix this entry:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://thecoolpics.net

For doing this just mark the "check box" and click Fix in HijackThis report.

Regarding registry problem, I said you to right-click the file and select "merge".

In a hurry, I missed out some wrong entries in the report...
Your PC is infected with BackDoor-CMQ trojan.

C:\WINDOWS\system\svhost.exe is the culprit here.

Update avast! definitions and scan entire PC in safe mode.

For enabling Task maanager,
download Enable the Task Manager and right-click "Merge".

Nice to hear that the problem is solved.
However, I would like to add that the HijackThis fixes and task manager which I pointed out is not fixed permanently. If Trojan still exists on your PC, the problems could resurface again. So make sure you keep your PC scanned with Antivirus and Antispyware softwares.
Antivirus: avast!
Antispyware: SpyBot or Windows Defender or Ad-aware

just for one time Scanning purpose use Kaspersky Anti Virus (Trial).

Avast/AVG doesnt detect all the Trojans.

my experience with Kaspersky- it removed 4 Trojans+ 5 Malwares from my system. all these malwares got into my PC in the Protection Period of AVG Free(old one)+ZAP
