the 64 bit processors are not runnin in pure 64 bit
its runnin in hybrid mode
therefore all 32 bit applications will still work on the platform

Athlon 64FX can run in three modes.

Long mode:
The OS performs in pure 64-bit mode ans supports only 64-bit operations.

Compactiblity mode:
It supports both 32 and 64-bit applications under a 64- bit OS.

legacy mode:
Now it runs only in 32-bit applications under a 32-bit OS. 64 bit application cant be used.

i'm sorry for my prev quotes,

Windows XP 64Bit is still in Beta stages, but will release final version within 3-4 months.

from Micosoft, Windows Server 2003 for 64-Bit is available.

SQL Server 2000 is also available as a 64bit edition.

Microsoft is fully prepared for the coming 64bit era.

and all their future releases will feature 64bit editions (.NET 2.0 (VS2005), SQLserver2005, Windows code name "LongHorn" etc)

.Net rox !
