desktop manager?
u mean u want eye candy on ur system ?
u want to use all those cool themes and visual styles et al eh ?

well the best out there is stylexp
ull get it at tgtsoft.com
as for shell replacements there is
talisman desktop
aston

besides u need to look for the right theme for either
check the "post ur desktop screenshot " thread and ask the ppl what they did if u like any of those desktops

for themes visit
themexp.org
wincustomise.com

for more u can use
rainlender <= calender on ur desktop
rainmeter < add meters ,other widgets on ur desktop
avedesk <= another program to add widgets . compatible with objectdock widgets as well
DOCKS : y'zdock, objectdock
objectbar <=taskbar replacement
konfabulator <= for windows now . to add widgets
tho its a resource hog

desktopx is kinda good but its a resource hog as well
besides i prefer directly editing the files .
desktopx doesnt offer anything gr8
stylexp is much better

i clearly mentioned ull get styleXP at tgtsoft.com
besides i gave a brief description of th eothers
a simple google with the program name will get u more than enuff info
and like i said go thru some of the desktops in the "post ur desktop screenshot" thread

docks are those things ull see at the bottom or top of the screen with some icons
widgets are just small programs .... for a particular purpose
they are written for specific programs
they are just diff things .. that look diff ... or are there for a different purpose
for eg if u use rainmeter u have widgets for displaying system info
and others which show cpu utilisation , ram utilisation etc etc..

besides these are additions .. what u need is a good theme and a visual style for now
just start off with styleXP ... then we'll take it a step at a time

ss u said u r a beginner, just use style xp...its very simple to use and many themes and visual styles are available for style xp.
download the themes u like from these sites:
http://www.themexp.org/
http://www.deviantart.com/
http://skins.deviantart.com/windows/visualstyle/
http://skins.deviantart.com/themes/
(do a bit of searching here and u will find amazing stuf)
just start with style xp...shell replacements can wait...
and yeah, if u can, patch the uxtheme.dll file so that u can enjoy the themes without a load on ur resources.
download the patcher from here: http://download.neowin.net/nw_uxtheme.zip
unzip it andrun the patcher in safe mode.

and oh yeah, i wud suggest not to go for desktopx, its just cr@p and sucks up a large amount of ur memory..
u can also use mobydock for docking objects if u want.

i did'nt say that i am a BEGINNER !
i meant to say that i am not known with the SYSTEM FILES. I have that much ability that i can handle many of da comp's probs.

Iv been using style xp since da past few days now, but i dont find nething great with it. Wat i want is some 'modification' of my current gui.
Something like desktopx, but it takes too many resurces

chill out buddy
did u have a look at the deviantart website? (esp this: http://skins.deviantart.com/windows/visualstyle/ )
all those visual styles r to be used with style xp...
but if u r willing to have a go at shell replacement, and if u want a more "hi-fi" sorta desktop (at the cost of ur memory), use Talisman Desktop or Aston. themes for talisman and aston are also available at deviantart.
btw, to change Icons, use Stardock IconPackager.
u will have to use a combination of these to create good lookin desktops.
for some free icons, here r some sites:
http://www.foood.net/
http://www.interfacelift.com/icons-win/

if u r still not satisfied, pls let us know....i can post some of my desktop screenshots that i made with style xp if u want...
