AMD 64 is deinitely a better buy if u are looking for future compatibility and good performance. AMD 64 proccys dont get hot, infact they are the coolest processors available around.
The AMD FX series is their flagship series, which is very costly. The vanilla AMD 64 proccy has all the right stuff for the normal user. For the motherboard go for Asus K8V or Gigabyte K8T800M. There is one from ASROCK too but it's not that good.
